The largest source of energy generation in São Tomé and Príncipe, in the colonial and post-independence period, was hydropower, through spring waters, representing at that time around 90% (Contador Hydropower Plant, Guegue Hydropower Plant and mini- in former agricultural companies).
With population growth and consequently the need to increase energy production, and climate change, today the opposite scenario exists, that is, more than 90% of production is thermal.
Investment Opportunities:
Production of electrical energy through Hydroelectric Power Plants
The country has enormous potential for production through Hydroelectric Power Plants, as some uses are not yet being explored, Rio Iô Grande, Rio Abade, etc.
Production of electrical energy through Solar Panels
Due to the size of its land area, and the availability of land for the production of electrical energy through solar panels, the ideal scenario for São Tomé and Príncipe is the combination of different sources of clean energy generation, being hydroelectric and solar.
